The NGSL Project has a new home…
The same great wordlists and tools, just a cleaner, easier to navigate website.
Since 2012, the New General Service List (NGSL) Project has been building and providing for free, the best wordlists in the world for second language learners of English. Thats said, we have been so busy building new word lists (7 now) and online learning tools, giving presentations and writing articles and materials for and about the NGSL Project that our website was neglected for many years and truly in need of an update. With an eye towards simplicity and making things easier to find, I have just completed a redo of the entire NGSL site. Please have a look around and let us know what you think. Below is a short description of key pages and features of the new site.
Blog - A new feature, which will also be shared on social media, my blog posts will provide short updates on current work on the NGSL Project. The blog post here, our first, gives a brief introduction to our new website, but just around the corner are blog posts introducing our 1.2 wordlist updates, some new online learning tools we’ve made including NGSL Wordle, the re-release of our In Focus EFL textbook series and new upcoming workbook series for TOEIC preparation based on our TOEIC Service List (TSL).
Landing Page - Our top page introduces the NGSL Project and its history, as well as our vision for the project, short explanations of the importance of vocabulary coverage and our modularized approach to vocabulary development, and a link to our TED Talk I gave back in 2015 introducing the project.
Tools Section - Gives a brief introduction to our many free tools for teaching, learning, researching and utilizing our wordlists for content development. We also provide direct links to these tools for each wordlists on that wordlist page.
Wordlist Pages - Each wordlist now has its own dedicated page with a short introduction to the list and the corpus it is based on, a brief discussion of the list’s efficacy and links to various free downloadable versions of the list and links to the many free online learning tools we have either utilized or made ourselves.
Research - Lists up refereed journal articles where one or more of the NGSL wordlists played a key role in the research.
Store - Provides short explanations and links to commercial language learning textbooks, software and products that utilize NGSL word lists as a key feature.
Donation Page - We have just created a new page to accept donations and financial support. For the past decade we have build our open-source wordlists, free apps and tools without any school or government grants or donations. Our vision has been to do whatever we can to make a positive impact in students, teachers and content developers lives through the creation of free vocabulary resources based on sound science and pedagogy. But creating and updating corpora and wordlists, building apps, and maintaining websites and domains requires significant financial resources that we have had difficulty in keeping up with.
